Latest Info on Emil Carlsen: The Complete Known Works

The last two years have kept me more than busy. Now there is some time to be able to focus on my painting and the final proofs of the book. The Emil Carlsen book has over 1000 images and with new works arriving at auction it has really kept me scrambling. But, there is a time when you must stop and just go with it. So that time is rapidly approaching. I am trying to approve the final proofs before late summer. Here is the book abstract for those that are interested. Several fans of Carlsen have contacted me and based on your suggestions I am now using a larger format than the 8.5" x 8.5" format. I have made it the largest printable format 12" x 12". Now bulging at more than 1000+ pages the book will be in two volumes. One with the essays and the other with the just the images and descriptions of each painting. This way visually it is clean and simple. Hopefully it will allow students to purchase the images without spending for the entire book. The pages now are black and the description layouts are more simple and streamline. Thanks to all for their kind suggestions!

Emil Carlsen: The Complete Known Works
Emil Carlsen, Danish American artist and educator [1848-1932] has won a major painting award every year of his life since the age of twenty-nine -- yet a comprehensive book about the man and his work has never been published. Carlsen's closest friends, who nurtured his painting technique included nineteenth century America's most prominent painters: Chase, Weir, Twatchman, and Hassam. Emil Carlsen's style blurred the line between Realism and Impressionism while remaining unique. A quiet loner, Emil's expansive body of work is nearly absent from every major museum around the world but has been preserved through the caring hands of private collectors making this an invaluable resource to collectors, scholars, and artists.

Emil Carlsen: The Complete Known Works lavishly illustrates more than one thousand paintings by the artist using reference images, authoritative essays and painting research including: provenance, exhibition history, bibliographic references, and past / current values. The biographical essay provided by Danish art historian, Kim Lykke Jensen (author of several Danish art books) with a technical essay by William Eric, realist painter/collector (represented by Art Modern Gallery and trained under Nelson Shanks, Andrea J. Smith, and Brandon Soloff) and Lansing Moore, licensed art conservator and owner of the oldest continuing running decorative arts studio in New York City (since 1902). Additional resources and help have been provided by the American Art Archives of the Smithsonian Institute, Sothebys, Christies, Spanierman Gallery, the Frick Museum, among others.

Why This Book?
-There is no book currently in print on Emil Carlsen. The last book in print about Emil Carlsen were exhibition catalogs from 1999 and 1975. Both are highly sought after in the out of print market, selling for hundreds ($250 on average) of dollars each with up to a two year waiting list for a copy. No book every has been written covering the artists entire life’s work.

- Emil Carlsen is considered among Classical Realist painting circles to be a hero and model. Classical Realism is one of the fastest growing segments of the art market today. Studios to learn Classical Realism have multiplied by about 100 times in the last five years. There were about 10 major studios of Realism just 5 years ago -- now there are about 150-200 studios worldwide.

- No past catalog on Emil Carlsen ever considered more than one or two areas/subjects of his work or has tried to view his work within context.

- Approximately 100 paintings or less of the 1000+ known works are in museums making this painter accessible to collectors and this book an invaluable resource. Many museums de-acquisitioned his work after his death to raise funds for more well known Impressionist artists (who were Emil Carlsen’s closest friends). Works by Carlsen regularly come up for auction (approximately 300-400 lots in the last 10 years) selling for approx. $1000 - $50,000 each. With the last 2 years selling at record levels.

- Emil Carlsen created art in a transitional period in history, similar to our own time, and is seen as relevant to today's artists and appeals to today's collector tastes. Realist artists today look to him for compositional ideas for still life and landscape paintings. Similar paintings that show his influence can be seen filling magazines like American Art Collector.

Emil Carlsen Auction Update and More Authentication Requests

I recently bid and won a beautiful Emil Carlsen from a reputable auction house - (Thanks Shannon's). I am now a proud Emil Carlsen original owner! I should get the painting soon from the auction house. The Dines Carlsen that was up for sale sold ABOVE auction estimate I believe for $19,000! Like I mentioned in my previous blog entry it was one of the best still life paintings I had seen by him.

I have been getting many requests to authenticate Emil Carlsen's world wide. I might be considered one of the few people who is an expert on Carlsen but I want to let people know that there are others to seek out as well as myself. You might want to have me review the item and then get a second opinion from Jeffrey Morseburg (morseburgart@earthlink.net), a long time respected dealer of Emil Carlsen works.

Unfortunately there seem to be a lot of FLORAL painting fakes. These had their height in the late 1980's at auction and today I had to tell someone that they owned probably a 1987 fake Carlsen.

I did also find a person who is looking to authenticate an Emil Carlsen on ARTINFO but I was unable to create a free account. I suspect it actually might be real and so that excites me!

Emil Carlsen Book Update III

This week I have been fortunate enough to help authenticate an Emil Carlsen from Denmark. It is very exciting as I just can not contain myself when I see his work in person. I will review with restorers and others to see if we can determine if it is a Chinese fake. Unfortunately, you must be very careful since I am starting to see more and more fake Carlsen's from China.

I would like to thank all those who are expressing interest in the book EMIL CARLSEN: THE COMPLETE KNOWN WORKS. I have been hard at work on the layout. The shear amount of images take hours to manipulate. I hope this is all done soon but, will not rush a book of this importance because it might possibly become the definitive book on his life and work.

This week there is a Dines and Emil Carlsen up at auction. Hopefully I will win the Carlsen as I plan to bid. Sadly the Dines (one of the best from him that I have seen at auction) is out of my price range.

Does Chris Peters Have A Few Sketetons in His Closet?

This month, artist and friend to ClassicalRealist.org, Chris Peters, is presenting "The End and After" from August 9 - 30, 2008 at the Copro / Nason Gallery in Santa Monica, CA. Chris is known for his Vanitas style paintings, one of the few who persue that genre with any consistency.

Of his work the gallery says: "Chris's paintings try to find the beauty in that uneasy twilight place between life and death, between reality and unreality, between self and what the write H.P. Lovecraft called "the others". The objects in the paintings draw from the classic symbolism of Vanitas stil life and catholic religious paintings; and all refer to the cycle of life, death and the promise of ressurection.

The Germans have a word "unheimlich" which translated is a blur between "uncanny" and "eerie" and perhaps comes the closest to describing Chris's work."

Emil Carlsen Book Update

Thought i would update everyone on the new Emil Carlsen book I have been working on. Emil Carlsen: The Complete Known Works is really coming along. I have now identified about 750 paintings by Carlsen along with some Drawings. I have about 650 visual represenations gathered and more coming each day. Remember if you know of anyone that has an Emil Carlsen please have them contact me direct (bill@classicalrealist.org) and I will add the item to the book. The book is looking like it will be about 850 pages. It will cost about $100-$200 bucks but it will be the ultimate book. It is taking more time than I ever imagined because I am researching and listing PROVENANCE for each painting, MATERIALS, SIGNATURE INFO, MEASUREMENTS, EXHIBITION HISTORY, etc. so much in a little book! So thanks for all those who keep expressing interest in the book and when it will be complete. Right now it still looks like it will be several more months.

Emil Carlsen Book Update

As many of you know I have been working on publishing a new Emil Carlsen book. I thought I would give an update on (working title) Emil Carlsen: The Complete Known Works. Work is proceeding well but slow. I have been gathering about 500 works and making sure that they are carefully researched and documented. I am just about done with cataloging and will soon be turning my attention to the long and (i'm sure) painful process of Image approval / usage.

If you know of anyone who has high resolution images of his work or own original works please have them contact me at bill@classicalrealist.org . I still have so many entries missing visual representation! I believe the book will be published privately on LuLu.com and than about a year later be available on Amazon.com and B&N.com. I want to make sure that people who might have private collections of his work will have a chance to hear about the book before the final one is submitted to the two big on-lines and no additions/changes would be able to be made of his work.

Fresco Painting Workshops in Álamos, Sonora, México

A close friend of the ClassicalRealist.org, Daan Hoeskstra will be offering traditional old school fresco workshops in Mexico. See the details below.

Class Description:
Fresco is a technique used for mural painting. Most of the murals painted by Diego Rivera, for example, were done in fresco. The Maya Indians did fresco paintings in the Pre-Columbian era, as did the inhabitants of Pompeii.

Now you can learn this ancient technique in a simple, introductory five-day workshop in the beautiful colonial town of Alamos, Sonora. You will learn every step of the fresco process, including preparing the plaster, plastering a fresco panel, how to grind pigments, and which pigments to use. Each student will paint at least one fresco panel on terracotta, the traditional support for practicing fresco technique.

Classes are open to students ages 16 and up. One does not need to be an artist to learn and appreciate the process that Rivera and Orozco used.

Location and hours:
Workshops will be held Monday thru Friday, from 9 AM to 1 PM at the Casa de Cultura, Loma Guadalupe, in Alamos.

Our Favorite Museum Announces It's Closing

To those CR and Realist artists living in New York The Dahesh Museum was a private oasis. At any time the museum was gratefully quiet allowing the viewer intimate time with the largest 19th & 20th Century European Academic Art collection outside of Europe. Hours could be spent gazing carefully at their amazing gem like Geromes or any other masterful painters of the past in their focused collection.

The ClassicalRealist.org wishes the museum the best on their efforts to find a new permanent home for the collection and praises it for it's mission to built it's own web site out with more of it's works.

We will miss you!

Disappointment About The Original Emil Carlsen Book

A few months ago we announced that the original Vance Jordan Publication on Emil Carlsen would be available. Unfortunately after about 200 hours of re-typesetting and working with the Vance Jordan Estate (and their lawyers) and notifying the original author -- the project had to be pulled. We worked the last year in good faith believing they supported the project but at the time of launch they decided to not republish.

As you can image this was a huge disappointment as we offered any amount of the proceeds they wanted to keep and the rest was to go to our non-profit to create a scholarship fund for artists in Vance Jordan's Name.

Since this was a huge blow to the organization, we are currently working on our own Emil Carlsen Book. It will be MUCH larger, include more color photos, and be written from an artist point of view: including a catalog of his still life props (based on when we believe he might have purchased them), and more details about his technique. Depending on the final direction of the book we might also include some or many of the still life works of Pushman, Weir, Twatchman, Duveneck, Chase, Chardin, Ribot, Vollen, and Carlsen's own son Dine working in a similar style. Already we have uncovered almost 100 more Emil Carlsen works not shown in the original publication, or works that had been marked "location unknown" or previously had no color picture at that time which are now available.

So please be patient with us as we must now buy, request, and get permission from all the different people and institutions to allow us to use images of the works.

Buon Fresco Artist Shares Traditional Methods In New Workshops May/June 2008

Friend to ClassicalRealist.org, Regional editor of Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine, and head of his own Atelier, Daan Hoekstra will be sharing with a select group of students and advanced artists techniques in traditional fresco. Picture above illustrates the traditional lime slaking process. Daan is based in a small cultural town in northern Mexico.

Hoekstra was a former student of Richard Lack student and started the influential Classical Realism Quarterly publication, that today (although hard to find and out of print) is still a font of information about classical training and philosophical thinking. Daan worked side by side with Mark Balma (another Lack student) who is most known for his traditional frescos in America and beyond.
